Frequently Asked Questions

How does Oman compare to other Middle East destinations?

Completely different from Dubai or Qatar. There are no skyscrapers, no mall culture, and no manufactured attractions. What Oman offers is landscape, authenticity, and one of the most genuine hospitality cultures in the region.

What should I wear in Oman?

Oman is a Muslim country with conservative dress standards in public areas, souqs, and mosques. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appropriate. Resort properties are more relaxed.

Do I need a visa for Oman?

US, UK, EU, and most Western passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival or an e-visa in advance. Processing is straightforward and the fee is modest.

Is Oman safe for travelers?

Yes. Oman is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the Middle East and among the safest in the world. It has a stable government and a strong tradition of hospitality toward visitors.

Don't Miss!

A night at a small luxury camp in the Wahiba Sands. The dunes turn red at sunset and gold at dawn. The sky after dark is one of the cleanest in the world at this latitude. Dinner around a fire, the silence of the desert after the generators go off. This is not an activity. It is the reason to come to Oman.

What to See and Do

  • Wadi Shab: a canyon walk through turquoise pools that ends with a swim through a cave to a hidden waterfall. One of the most memorable half-days available anywhere in the Middle East.

  • Nizwa Fort and Friday Souq: the most complete historic fort in Oman, surrounded by a market that still trades silver, goats, dates, and frankincense. Best visited on a Friday morning.

  • Wahiba Sands desert overnight: the dunes run 150 kilometres south from the edge of the settled land. Arriving at sunset, sleeping under a sky with no light pollution, leaving at dawn. This is what draws people back.

Oman: The Arabia That Has Always Been Here

Most people know the Middle East through Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Oman is a different country entirely. The skyscrapers are not here. What is here is a coastline of hidden wadis and turquoise water, a desert of 150-kilometre dunes, a mountain plateau at 2,000 metres where rose farms survive on ancient irrigation channels, and a culture of hospitality that has not been modified for tourism. The luxury infrastructure has quietly arrived. The crowds have not. Oman is at the exact point on the development curve where everything is available but nothing is overrun.

When to go

Best time to visit

Peak Season

October through April. The desert and mountain regions are ideal. Coast and wadis are at their best.

Sweet Spot

October to December or February to March. Comfortable temperatures across all regions, clear skies. July and August bring the khareef monsoon to Dhofar in the south, which turns the normally arid hills dramatically green. Worth timing a trip around if the south is on the itinerary.
