Frequently Asked Questions

How does Montenegro compare to Croatia?

Less crowded, less expensive, and equally beautiful. The bay is arguably more dramatic than anything on the Dalmatian coast. The restaurant scene is simpler but the seafood is excellent.

Is Montenegro safe to travel?

Yes. It is one of the safest countries in the Balkans, with low crime and well-developed tourist infrastructure along the coast.

Which airport do I fly into for Montenegro?

Tivat (TIV) is the most convenient for the bay and the Riviera. Podgorica (TGD) is the capital airport and works if you are combining with inland Montenegro.

Don't Miss!

The drive from Kotor up to Cetinje via the old serpentine road. There are 25 switchbacks carved into the mountain face above the bay. It takes longer than the tunnel but the views over the water from each hairpin explain exactly why people keep coming back to Montenegro. Stop at every overlook.

What to See and Do

  • Kotor Old Town: a UNESCO-listed medieval city completely enclosed by walls. Walk the walls to the fortress at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive from the cruise ships.

  • Bay of Kotor boat trip: hire a small boat and visit Our Lady of the Rocks, the man-made island church built by sailors over three centuries. The bay at water level is completely different from the road.

Montenegro: The Adriatic Before the Crowds Arrive

Montenegro is where Croatia was twenty years ago: genuinely beautiful, not yet overrun, and priced like a destination that has not yet been discovered. The Bay of Kotor cuts thirty kilometres inland through mountains that drop straight to the water. The walled city of Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The Riviera south of Budva has beaches that rival anything on the Dalmatian coast, with a fraction of the infrastructure and none of the summer chaos. The hotels are arriving fast. The right time to go is now.

When to go

Best time to visit

Peak Season

July and August. The Riviera fills with yachts and the old town gets crowded by mid-morning.

Sweet Spot

May, June, or September. The bay is calm, temperatures are ideal, and the coastal towns are easy to move through. October is excellent for the bay and the mountains. The Riviera beaches are quieter and the light is exceptional.
